Preparing for Success in Competitive Speech
I. It is NOT Complicated
A. Do not overthink this.
1. We are outlining the process here for you. Do what the coaches tell you, and the pieces DO fall into place
2. THERE IS NO PERFECT TOPIC/SCRIPT. Stop looking for it. The WAY you present your speech is far more powerful than WHAT you present. (as long as the “what” is quality. It will be, because you have coaches).
B. Do the work early.
1. Nervous about giving a speech? Good! The single BEST way to combat those nerves is through PREPARATION. Follow our process. Trust in the outcome. You will see.
2. The “hard” part of forensics is the writing/memorizing part. GET THAT PART DONE ASAP, so you can get to the FUN stuff (making your presentation great)!!
C. Trust.
1. Your coaches have been doing this for many, many years, and have coached people to Championships on the Local, State, and National levels. TRUST their advice.
2. This race is won step by step and in a straight line. Rushing around in chaotic circles is not an effective path for crossing the finish. Trust the process, focus on success.
II. The Process. It. Is. Simple.
A. Step by Step, and in a Straight Line
1. Follow the Timeline, and you WILL be prepared. EVERYone chooses an Informative, Persuasive, OR Entertainment topic.
a. Weeks 1-2. Topic selection, Main point selection, Researching, outlining.
b. Weeks 3-4. Work with coaches on outlines, writing. By the end of week 4, everyone has a draft completed.
c. Weeks 5-6 MEMORIZING/Visual Aides (work WITH coaches on these).
d. Weeks 6-End. Each/EVERY Week is MORE “POLISH AND PERFECT”!
B. Prepare your SECOND event.
1. When coaches think you are ready.
2. This will likely overlap with the above timeline.
3. This will likely be an Interp (acting) event, but you will have room for input.
C. Prepare your THIRD event.
1. This will likely be a “Limited Prep” event, such as Extemporaneous or Impromptu.
2. Coaches will advise on this.

This popular quotation from Benjamin Franklin perfectly embodies so much about our activity:
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
The ONLY time we have seen students fail, is when they fail to follow the process, ignore the advice of coaches, and never fully memorize their presentations. That’s it. Simple. Trust. Do the work. Succeed.
